PATCHWORK TAROT

by Jen

Becoming the Fool

Pack extra socks, they’d said. Don’t forget your first aid kit. Oh…and extra batteries for your flashlight! Is your sleeping bag warm enough? What if it rains? Aren’t you worried about bears? Or men? Not everyone you meet will be good, you know. You have to be careful…

She reached down and plucked a tiny, white starflower from the trailhead, tucking it behind her ear. She was done with careful.

She was done with planning for every f*ing thing that could possibly go wrong. Or right.

For once - even if only for a little while - she wanted to be a human BE-ing; to see where it took her.

And to quiet the voices that told her what she should do and who she should be. Her own voice, too. It hollered just as loud.

So maybe she should shut up. Listen to the Gray Jay, instead. Or the squirrel. Was he scolding her for venturing into “his” forest or telling her to get a move on? Who knew?

She eyed the muddy, washed out path ahead, using the toe of her hiking boot to nudge the fallen tree that bridged it. It wobbled. Would she end up falling, covered in mu…

Her phone rang, loud and shrill. She dug it out of her pocket; felt the familiar dread when “work” lit the screen. What now? They knew she was on leave. She started to answer, her finger poised to swipe right.

On the other hand…

Screw it. She powered the wretched thing off. There was a crack in that boulder by the trail. The phone would be there when she got back…or it wouldn’t. She shrugged. Less baggage on her journey, either way. And wasn’t it funny how heavy such a small thing could be?

She leapt onto the branch and stepped forward.

Sun warmed her face. She smiled.

Onward.
